Complementarity in a low-carbon system

Low-carbon electricity does not depend on a single technology. It depends on combining different profiles: variable generation, controllable generation, storage, interconnectors, efficiency and demand management.

Reactors can supply large amounts of low-carbon electricity for long periods. This does not remove the need for solar, wind or hydro; it can reduce the fossil generation needed when weather-dependent output is low.

The exact value for Portugal can only be assessed through transparent scenarios covering demand, grids, costs and time. Supporting a study of this option is not the same as supporting a plant at any price.
